World Poverty is a Real Issue by Lana Jennings
Did you know that half of the world live on less than $2 a day? Or did you know that 1 in 2 children (which is the equivalent to 1 billion kids in the world) live in poverty stricken countries? Or did you know that 640 million live without sufficient shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water, 270 million have no access to health services and 10.6 million died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5, which is roughly 29,000 children per day?
People in this day and age usually think they have it tough but I bet they haven't even glanced at these statistics. World poverty is a real issue. About 25,000 people die of hunger or hunger related issues everyday. Yes, everyday. This means that every 3 and a half seconds someone across the globe dies. So when you sit down with your friends at lunch and you have a chicken and lettuce sandwich maybe you should think about all those starving people before you throw it out.
Though there is enough food in the world to go around, the problem is that all the hungry people are trapped in severe poverty-stricken situations and can't get out. These people lack money to buy enough food to nourish them and their families. Being constantly malnourished and hungry, they usually get weak and often severely sick which means they can't work for money or food, which makes them and their families hungrier and poorer. Can you see where this is going? Well if you can't, this ongoing spiral continues and then usually ends up with death for them and their families.
World Poverty isn't just world hunger; it also includes diseases such as AIDS, malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia etc. But one of the most saddening type of poverty that you don't usually hear about are the children that are kidnapped from their family in the middle of the night and then tortured to make them angry so they are able to kill their own family members, relatives, friends and people from their own communities. These children are known as child soldiers.
But there is a way out of World Poverty. If everyone donates $1 a week this can add up to a lot of money to go towards all these suffering children and families. There are many organizations out there that help World Poverty, but I will just name a few for you. Make World Poverty History, Action Chick, Poverty, Oxfam, CARE etc. I personally am involved in Action Chick, which is working towards building a home in the Watoto Village in Uganda. The Watoto Village is a place for orphaned children and also a place of security so they cannot be kidnapped and made into child soldiers. There are many organizations out there so why don't you go out and look for one. But you could also sponsor a child to give them a life that you have always had and they haven't. So just think about it because together we can MAKE WORLD POVERTY HISTORY!!!d they
